Air New Zealand has spelled the end of dreaded check-in queues and counters by investing $30 million in a revolutionary self-service system which it claims will cut passenger processing times by up to 40 per cent.
Changes to the airpoints scheme will also make it easier to attain frequent-flyer benefits like Koru Lounge access.
Domestic airline head Bruce Parton said in a market where all airlines were charging the same fares, the only way to attract customers was to provide more convenience.
Mr Parton said it would take years for competitors Qantas and Pacific Blue to replicate the system, which was a world first.
Check-in times would remain at 30 minutes for passengers with bags and 20 minutes without bags, but over time would probably reduce. Check-in closes 15 minutes before departure.
