Keeping safe (and covered) on holiday

One the most annoying things that can happen to anyone especially when travelling abroad is to have your wallet stolen with credit cards and cash, throw in the passport and it becomes a big hassle!

With Four Corners running a story on the “Gypsy Child crime wave which is gripping Europe” we thought it might be useful to share some tips to avoid being a pick pocket victimor have any of your possessions stolen from you while travelling.

  1. When touring around be vigilant of your surroundings and mindful of people who are not with your group.
  2. When paying for things be as inconspicuous as possible, especially in market areas.
  3. Add extra security levels such as safety pins or even key rings to secure zippers on your bags or things that are holding your valuables.
  4. Leave anything you don’t need with you locked in the hotel safe. On day trips just take one credit card and a small amount of cash.
  5. Store your wallet, camera or other valuables at the bottom of your backpack or knapsack.

Most importantly, make sure you take out a travel insurance policy before you travel and choose your policy carefully.

When purchasing a travel insurance policy, it’s really important to make sure you read the fine print so that you understand what you are and are not covered for. Here is a list of some things to look out for when choosing a travel insurance product:

  • What activities are included/excluded
  • Whether cover is provided in the event of terrorism, an epidemic or pandemic
  • Luggage item limits, and use of definitions such as “unattended”
  • What the limit is for emergency dental treatment
  • What the standard excess is on claims under the policy

Finally, make sure you always carry your policy number and emergency assistance phone number with you whenever you travel.

Share your tips to avoid becoming a victim of crime when travelling. We would love to hear your advice in the comments field below.
