Flying alone with children

Travelling with children alone on a flight can be an unreal experience, especially when there seems to be no one around to provide you with help juggling your children. So should the thought of flying with children leave you grounded? Or should you just harden up and get on the plane?

In a recent article “How did the friendly skies become so unfriendly?“, News.com.au’s Mollie Hemingway, a mother of two, fondly recalls a flight attendant – travelling as a passenger, no less – who became her guardian angel on a flight that seemed destined to be the flight from, well, a place with no angels.

Flying to Denver with her daughters, ages one and two, Hemingway was stressed to the point of sobbing when her older child soiled her seat minutes after takeoff, meaning she had to balance two kids on her lap.

Changing nappies in the tiny bathroom was a challenge, and the sleep-deprived toddlers were in melt-down, “turning into crazed beings that kicked the seats in front of them,” Ms Hemingway said.

The flight attendants were nowhere to be seen, until the angel appeared, offering to take the baby.

“I practically threw the baby at her,” Ms Hemingway said. “Later she exchanged seats so she could sit next to me and help me entertain the girls. I am so thankful for her help.”
