Phenergan for kids, and shot of Gin for me thanks

What is the best travel gadget that you travel with, some parents might say a bottle of Phernergan!

So how many parents actually give their kids a shot of Phenergan, while casually ordering another scotch or gin for those long hauls flights to far away destinations?

Recently I was discussion with another parent who mention about using Phernergan and the merit when flying with children. So I have decided to share quickly what I can find about Phenergan and take a look at the merits and disadvantages for giving to your kids while taking off on holidays or returning from vacation.

What is Phernergan
Basically Phenergan is an antihistamine which used to treat a number of conditions: from
skin allergies, respiratory symptoms due to allergies, motion sickness (travel sickness), and can assist children in the management of the symptoms of chicken pox and measles by acting as a sedative.

Advantages for using
The real advantage for anyone taking Phernergan on holidays is to manage the bodies levels of a substance called histamine which is produced by the body in response to foreign substances that the body becomes allergic to. Hence why its called a antihistamine, so if you need to control any of the things mentioned Antihistamines can help reduce allergic symptoms.

* dermatitis, hives, hay-fever, bites and stings,
* respiratory symptoms due to allergies – runny nose,
* when a child is nausea and vomiting brought on by motion sickness (travel sickness),
* assist children in the management of the symptoms of chicken pox and measles by acting as a sedative.

When not to give to your child

* If your child is under 2 do not use for children under two years of age could be put at risk of having a  potential fatal respiratory depression.
* Sounds of tiny feet in the house well, do not give Phenergan to a newborn or premature babies it could just be fatal.

Horror Stories

It can make your child sedative for a flight, however it can have a reverse effect and cause them to become unsettled. The parent mentioned above who I had a discussion with on the topic said it worked a dream on a long haul flight from Australia to the UK, however the reverse happened on the return leg back to Australia from the UK, where there little one could not settle and became agitated for all the whole trip. Is it worth the 50/50 risk?

Medical Advice – Always Always Always seek professional advice from a GP or doctor before administrating drugs.

Potential Side Effects and Risks

Phenergan may have unwanted side effects in some people and children so before you provide be sure that you understand that all medicines can have side effects.

Some common side effects from taking Pherneragan are

* dry mouth, nose & throat
* stomach upset
* nausea or vomiting
* diarrhoea or constipation
* tiredness or sleepiness
* restlessness
* dizziness
* blurred vision

Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects.

So where does that leave you more confused? Personally, I would travel with a bottle but I would not be using it to be a sedative for my child. We have had some personal success with the product for managing skin flare ups from time to time on allergic reactions.

If you are looking for sedative for your child, nothing beats some endless activity, followed by a hearty meal guaranteed to send any kid to sleep eventually. Happy  peaceful travels…
