Australian families are heading to Bali in droves – and not just for the beaches, writes John Borthwick.

Australia, What Are You Waiting For? boomed a recent editorial headline in The Bali Times asking when, if ever, the Australian Government would lift its travel caution on Indonesia, as the US recently has. However, Australians aren’t waiting for anything.

We’re back to Bali in droves – 127,300 of us in the first half of this year alone, an increase of 48 per cent over the previous year, making the island our third most popular overseas destination after New Zealand and Thailand.

Australian families have long been drawn to Bali but these days we go for more than the beaches. Family-friendly hotels, adventure excursions, increasingly sophisticated shopping and, as ever, the hospitable Balinese people are the drawcards.
