It’s not one you’re likely to read about in the design magazines. But as a pure expression of the charms of the northeastern coast of Brazil, it’s without peer. Located on Ponta Negra, Natal’s most famous beach, it’s nothing if not splendidly situated. In Brazil when they say a hotel is on the beach, it’s on the beach; one wrong turn on your way to breakfast and you’re fishing your newspaper out of the Atlantic.

Small size is almost always an auspicious sign. Manary Praia comprises just twenty-three rooms, ten of them deluxes which face directly out to sea and thirteen of them standards which are frankly not too shabby either — all have views of one sort or another. What’s inside them is not exactly lavish, but these rooms, for all their traditional charm, are deceptively comfortable, and fitted out with all the modern conveniences.

The Manary restaurant just happens to be among the most highly regarded in town, serving ocean-fresh seafood and other regional specialties in a torch-lit open-air setting. It’s an experience that’s suited for families or couples in equal measure. There’s one pool for each persuasion, to begin with, and plenty to do — Ponta Negra makes for a fine resort-town experience, and the city of Natal is just beyond.
