Volcano Disruption: Advice for Australians

Australians affected by flight disruptions caused by Iceland’s erupting volcano will be able to seek support from their insurers, according to Australia’s number one online travel insurer Travel Insurance Direct.

General Manager Ian Jackson confirmed Travel Insurance Direct customers who held policies prior to today (April 16) would be covered for cancellation and/or rearrangement of their journey, or the unused portion of their journey, as a result of the volcanic eruption and associated ash clouds.

He said policies included cover for additional accommodation and travel expenses if transport services have been cancelled, delayed or rescheduled as a result of the volcanic eruption or ash clouds.

“We recommend travellers first seek assistance from their airline or travel agent to make alternative arrangements,” Mr Jackson said. “Some airlines are providing penalty-free options to amend travel arrangements and full refunds for unused travel, so we recommend you contact your airline as the first point of action.”

“Unfortunately many people don’t consider travel insurance until the last minute,” Mr Jackson said.  “The unprecedented disruption we’re seeing across Europe today provides an important reminder that travellers should arrange insurance as early as possible, otherwise they’re not protected against anything unexpected.”

Mr Jackson said there were several steps travellers should take if affected by flight cancellations due to the volcanic eruption:

  • First seek the assistance of the airline or travel provider for alternative arrangements and accommodation
  • Where the airline can’t assist, obtain a letter confirming flight cancellation or delay so that an insurance claim can be made
  • Keep receipts for any costs involved in making alternative arrangements
  • Do everything possible to minimise the cost of alternative arrangements
  • Refer to policy details and contact the insurer for advice if in doubt.
